Album Launch: Dana Lyn and Kyle Sanna 11/23

How It’s New York:  Violinist Dana Lyn is a fixture in New York Irish music, and used to run the session at Mona’s.  Guitarist Kyle Sanna plays jazz and his own composition in Brooklyn.  The album is eclectic, and what’s more New York than that?

How It’s Irish:  Dana played with the late Johnny Cunningham,  Cherish the Ladies, and still plays with Mick Moloney, among others.  The album is praised by Kevin Burke.

Kevin Burke writes:

“A very innovative recording – mysterious, playful and charming with
some lovely musical surprises. From the excellent musicianship and
skillfully and fascinating arrangements to the relaxed whimsy of the
CD package, the whole project is bursting with creativity, yet still
manages to convey a love for simplicity – a remarkable achievement.”

Fiddler Dana Lyn and guitarist Kyle Sanna first met at a traditional
Irish music session in New York City ten years ago. They soon
discovered a shared interest in classical, world and experimental
music, as well as a deep admiration and respect for Irish music. Both
are active participants in Brooklyn’s eclectic music scene as
arrangers, composers, players and improvisers. Their collaborative
effort, The Hare Said a Prayer to the Rainbow and Followed the Fox
Down the Hole, is reflective of their wide range of musical influences
and experience. Traditional tunes, original compositions and
improvised intermezzi are woven together to create a musical narrative
that is both child-like and sophisticated, and full of unexpected
twists and turns.”

Dana Lyn has performed with Mick Moloney’s Green Fields of America,
Grammy Award-winning vocalist Susan McKeown, the late Johnny
Cunningham and Cherish the Ladies, as well as indie favorites the
Walkmen, Florence and the Machine and Bill Withers. She has been
featured on two documentaries on traditional Irish music that aired in
Ireland and has had string arrangements commissioned and performed by
the Apple Hill String Quartet, the Brooklyn Rider and the National
Army Strings.

Kyle Sanna has performed with some of today’s greatest virtuosos,
including Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile and Yo-Yo Ma, and with veterans of
New York’s downtown scene such as Matt Darriau, Erik Friedlander, and
Satoshi Takeishi. Kyle’s arrangements appear on two recent Sony
Classical releases by cellists Jan Vogler and Yo-Yo Ma. His
arrangements have been performed live by Korean pop superstar Rain, by
Irish fiddler Martin Hayes and Brooklyn Rider on NPR’s Performance
Today, and by Yo-Yo Ma on The Colbert Report.
