Write a Love Poem, Win a Claddagh Pendant! Deadline 2/14

How It’s New York:  New York is literary, of course, and Mary Ann McCarra-Fitzpatrick, a poet herself, who brought this to our attention, is from the Bronx.
How It’s Irish:  The contest is sponsored by Siopa.com, who sell Irish goods, run by folks from Galway

Roses are red, violets are blue…

If you feel a romantic ditty coming on, why not enter it in the Siopa Competition  and win a 10-Carat Gold Claddagh Pendant?

I know yesterday we pointed out that officially, at least according to lastminute.com,and based on a lot of anecdotal evidence (“is the furniture paid for?”) the Irish are the least romantic in Europe.

Prove me wrong!*  Info below (and on Siopa.com’s Facebook Page), where people are posting poems as they enter:

January 20th 2012 To celebrate Valentine’s Day, we are launching a nationwide poetry competition on our facebook page.

Free to enter, and open to anyone aged 18 or over, the subject is ‘love’ and the maximum number of lines is 40. Judged by acclaimed Irish poet, Leanne O’Sullivan, the competition is now open for submissions and closes 14th February. For inspiration, start by reading of one of Yeat’s poems and think of his unrequited love for Maud Gonne! But we don’t even need to reach into the past for creative encouragement – our own recently elected President, Michael D Higgins, champions cultural and literary life in a bid to overcome our challenges. He says, “Our successes, after all, in the eyes of so many in the world have been in our literature, art, drama and song and in how that drama and song have helped us cope with adversity, soothed the very pain which they describe so well, and opened the space for new possibilities.” So what better time than now to get pen to paper…or, more aptly, fingertips to keyboard! Visit our Facebook page for more updates!

How to Enter

1. Make sure you have ‘liked’ us on Facebook
2. Enter your poem on our facebook wall (max 40 lines or two verses)
3. Accepting entries from 23rd January – closes 14th February 2012 at 5:30pm
4. Share any poems you like that you see on our wall with others!

Prize

The winner will receive a 10-Carat Gold Claddagh Pendant – showing a heart, adorned by a crown, held by hands.

*Actually, Boy Meets Girl, Boy Loses Girl, Boy Writes Poem is oh so very Irish– but what the heck.  At least prove the Irish can write romantically…
