“The Scourge” – A Poetic Trip Down a Rocky Memory Lane

How it’s New York: At the Irish Rep in New York City
How it’s Irish: Production in Origin’s 1st Irish Theatre Festival

Often times those shows that hit closest to home are difficult to watch, but that is not totally the case with the lyrically original The Scourge, which opened last week as part of Origin’s 1st Irish Theatre Festival at the Irish Rep.

Written and performed by the extremely insightful Michelle Dooley Mahon we are immediately swept up into the humor and pain of living through the downward spiral of her mother on the road to death from Alzheimer’s.

With a simple set and a collection of props and musical snippets that pepper the prose of her soliloquoy, she paints the picture of a doting daughter who is fighting to keep things as normal as possible.  She doesn’t always succeed but she has the dedication to keep with it, and the result is something we can all relate to about the loss of a loved one.

Dooley-Mahon is delightful, sad, funny, heroic and prophetic in a performance that moves and inspires us to be much more aware of the positives in grief.

You can still catch The Scourge through Sunday, February 2nd, and you can find tickets here: The Scourge tickets
