New Session: Paddy Reilly’s Trad, Friday Nights: begins Sept. 2!

How It’s New York:  It takes place at Paddy Reilly’s, a New York Institution (celebrated its 25th anniversary this year).  And something new is always starting in New York.  And to make this even more New York– the first session was supposed to happen last Friday, but got cancelled due to Hurricane Irene!
How It’s Irish:  It’s an Irish music session!

Paddy Reilly’s is where I heard my first ever Irish music session, after a concert with John Doyle and Karan Casey at the now defunct wonderful club Satalla.  For years I couldn’t remember where we had gone but as soon as I walked in I instantly recognized the long bar, the area where musicians play, the back room.  It’s the bar where Larry Kirwan’s Black 47 had a residency for years.

Danny McLaughlin

The host tonight is piper Danny McLaughlin.  On Sept. 9, it will be Kevin McHugh.

Sebastian MacLochliann is the organizer.  He plays in a Pogues and Popes Tribute band called “Streams of Whiskey” who regularly play Paddy Reilly’s:

  • Streams of Whiskey are a Pogues, Shane MacGowan and the Popes Tribute Band. If you want to hear “fields of athenry” and “I’ll tell me ma” don’t bother coming to see us. We play Pogues, Pogues and only Pogues!!!

Next chance to catch them at Paddy Reilly’s is Sept. 17.

It’s about time NYC had some good Friday night sessions!  We have one now in Murphy’s Bar in Queens, and now Paddy Reilly’s!  yay!  Kind of makes up for the sting of losing the one at Spike Hill on Mondays…
