If you’ve heard of just one Irish dancer, it’s probably Michael Flatley. Born in Chicago, Flatley — who now resides in Cork County, Ireland and in London — first became a household name with the original production of Riverdance, which debuted in 1996 and has grossed over a billion dollars. Irish dancers, however, already knew him through his work with Mick Moloney and the Green Fields of America and the Chieftains, as well as his innovative use of his arms and upper body (they are stiffly held in traditional Irish dance).
Flatley may soon accumulate even more fans, thanks to this film “Lord of the Dance 3-D“. Directed by Marcus Viner, the film opens nationwide on Thursday — St. Patrick’s Day — and will play for one week only (it was already screened in London). Shot on location during five performances in November 2010 in 02 Arenas in Dublin, London, Berlin, the film not only features plenty of dancing, but also Flatley ruminating on his success and career.
