This week marks the first time the U.S. Open has been played at the storied Winged Foot since Phil Mickelson’s devastating loss in 2006. Lefty reached the 72nd hole on Sunday needing par to win his first U.S. Open title or bogey to qualify for a playoff with Geoff Ogilvy the next day. Instead, his ball bounced off a hospitality tent, causing him to double on the 18th and finish in second place. Now, Mickelson enters the U.S. Open with six second-place finishes in his career and a slim chance at contending for the title this year.

However, Dustin Johnson arrives as a favorite at Winged Foot following his dominance this summer. The world No. 1 has only lost to one golfer–Collin Morikawa–in 72 holes. After finishing as runner-up to Morikawa at the PGA Championship, Johnson bounced back to win the FedEx Cup and the $15 million prize, the biggest in golf.

As Johnson looks to stay on top, fans will still be keeping an eye on reigning Masters champion Tiger Woods. He hasn’t played well since the Tour returned in June, going T37 at the PGA Championship, T58 at the Northern Trust and T51 at the BMW Championship in his last three finishes. A shocking win from Woods at Winged Foot would give him his fourth U.S. Open title and a big boost before heading to Augusta in November.

NBC Universal acquired the broadcast and media rights for the U.S. Open in June and will split its coverage across NBC, Golf Channel and Peacock, its new streaming service.

The first round tees off on Thursday, Sept. 17, and the final round will take place on Sunday, Sept. 20.
Winner — Justin Thomas (14-1): After a tremendous effort at majors in 2017-18, J.T. has not had much success over the last four events with no top 10 finishes and a missed cut in his last four. Despite that, he’s been playing quite well in every phase of his game except with the putter. He is absolutely going to be in contention at Winged Foot. The question is whether he can push past guys like D.J. and Rahm. I’m not sure, but at 14-1, I’ll take one of the best players in the world.

Sleeper — Rickie Fowler (55-1): Look, I get it. Fowler always gets close but never gets the job done. He has 11 top 10s at majors over the last nine years and two in 2019 alone. Even recently he’s played well but fallen apart over the weekend. Here’s the thing. He’s going to spend the first two days at Winged Foot surrounded by fellow former Pokes as an Oklahoma State trio of Fowler, Viktor Hovland and Matthew Wolff will be pushing each other. All three are among the top 50 golfers in the world. You know what? Wolf (60-1) is a pretty good long shot, too. I like one of these three guys to be in the top 10 entering the weekend, which puts them in contention for the whole U.S. Open.

Top 10 lock — Dustin Johnson (17/2): D.J. is not someone I would normally consider a lock for anything, but considering the way he’s been playing, thinking he will not contend for the U.S. Open would be foolish. You could also slot Rahm in here. My normal “lock” in this space is McIlroy, the king of backdoor top 10s, but he’s not at the top of his game right now.

Star who definitely won’t win — Tiger Woods: I am of the belief that Tiger has more majors to win, but he is not going to take Winged Foot. Woods has not finished better than T21 at the U.S. Open since 2010. That’s a decade. Outside of his Masters victory, which is nothing to thumb one’s nose at, he’s finished no better than T21 in his last four majors, missing two cuts. He’s the biggest star out there, and he’s definitely not going to win — this week.

Top 5 in order: Justin Thomas, Webb Simpson, Jon Rahm, Patrick Cantlay, Dustin JOhnson

Surprise prediction: Phil Mickelson is in contention entering Moving Day. Lefty knows what it takes to win at Winged Foot (despite not doing so in 2006) and has a lot of internal and external motivation to exorcise his demons and not only go hard to win the U.S. Open but do so at this course. He’s not going to do it. But can he play well and be a handful of strokes off the lead through the first two rounds? You bet.
