The Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds will begin their best-of-three Wild Card Series on Wednesday afternoon in Atlanta. The Braves are the No. 2 seed in the National League, while the Reds earned the No. 7 seed. The Braves moved into first place on Aug. 17 and cruised to their third consecutive NL East title. The Reds had a more difficult path to the postseason. They had to win 11 of their final 14 games to storm to October.

Here is how you can watch their entire best-of-three Wild Card Series matchup. All three games will be played at Truist Park in Atlanta.Obvious statement is obvious, but it is a big deal. Neither the Braves nor the Reds have won a postseason round in a very long time. The Braves have not won a postseason round since the 2001 NLDS. For the Reds, you have to go back to the 1995 NLDS for their last postseason round victory. To be clear, this includes Wild Card Games.

Below, you’ll find updated scores of every game as well as some of the day’s biggest storylines. The battle of the aces in Cleveland never materialized. The Yankees hammered Shane Bieber on Tuesday night, tagging him for seven runs in 4 2/3 innings. Bieber did not allow more than three runs in any of his 12 regular season starts. The seven earned runs in Game 1 are exactly half the 14 earned runs he allowed in those 12 regular season starts. With the potential tying run at the plate, closer Ryan Pressly warmed up in the pen, and the right-handed Willians Astudillo slated to pinch hit, Baker stuck with Valdez. One curveball at the bottom of the zone later, Valdez had secured the crucial Game 1 with a game-ending double play.

The Chicago Cubs (34-26) enter the National League Wild Card round of Major League Baseball’s postseason as a No. 3 seed. They face the Miami Marlins (31-29), a team that they did not face at all during the regular season. The Cubs did not finish the way they would have hoped, going 4-6 down the stretch of their last ten games. The offense struggled overall, averaging just 3.4 runs per game during that time. Their bats did wake up toward the very end, though, scoring ten runs in two of their last three games against the Chicago White Sox.

The Marlins are baseball’s biggest surprise of 2020. In their first winning season since 2009, the Marlins played well enough to earn the sixth seed in the National League playoffs. They finished the season 5-5, including winning two of their last three against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.Sandy Alcantara will make the first postseason start of his career on Wednesday afternoon. Alcantara’s season numbers were solid (3.72 FIP, 8.4 K/9), but he punctuated his season with three strong starts in which he pitched a combined 19.1 innings and allowed just four earned runs while striking out 18 batters.

This matchup isn’t as difficult as it looks at first glance. The Cubs were just average against right-handed pitching this season, hitting to a .318 wOBA and .185 ISO overall. Their 25.9% strikeout rate was also among the worst in baseball against righties. They struggled specifically down the stretch and have been a much different offense than we’re used to seeing. The Chicago White Sox are making their first postseason appearance since 2008. Right-handed starter Lucas Giolito, who received the nod in Game 1 of their Wild Card Series against the Oakland Athletics, almost made it a very memorable playoff return.

Giolito delivered six perfect innings to begin the game, his first playoff appearance, and didn’t permit a baserunner until the bottom of the seventh inning. That’s when Tommy La Stella knocked a 2-2 pitch into center field. Prior to that at-bat, Giolito had recorded six strikeouts and required just 73 pitches to retire the first 18 Athletics hitters he faced.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Giolito was the first pitcher to be perfect through six innings of a playoff game since New York Yankees right-hander Mike Mussina did it against the Boston Red Sox in Game 1 of the 2004 American League Championship Series. If Giolito had found a way to secure the perfect game, it would’ve been only the second in postseason history. The first, and only, belonged to New York Yankees righty Don Larsen, who shut down the Brooklyn Dodgers in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series.

The Tampa Bay Rays earned the top seed and “home-field advantage” through the League Championship Series by virtue of going 40-20 during the regular season. They earned a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-three wild card round with a win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday. Tampa will try to advance to the ALDS on Wednesday.
Anything can happen over the course of two or three games, so there is danger in feeling too confident about a prediction. Still, the Rays can take some comfort in knowing they defeated the Blue Jays during the season series by a 6-4 margin. Toronto actually outscored Tampa Bay, 48-44, over those 10 games. Four of those contests were decided by a single run, suggesting this could be a tightly played series, even if Tampa Bay enters as the obvious favorite to advance. That will change when Kwang Hyun Kim makes the Cardinals’ first start of this wild-card series Wednesday at Petco Park.

With his first pitch, he will become the first pitcher to secure a save in his MLB debut and go on to start a postseason game later that same season. The 32-year-old paused a dominant career in the Korea Baseball Organization to pursue his MLB dream. He departed from his wife and children in South Korea, not knowing a global pandemic would keep them apart for months longer than they thought.
He adjusted to a new country, started learning a new language, and fought hard for a spot in the rotation at spring and summer camps. But he was left on the outside looking in, assigned a role as the closer, a move that never really made that much sense. He didn’t question it. He secured a save in the lone opportunity he was handed before he was promoted to the rotation.Tuesday night at Progressive Field, the New York Yankees opened their Wild Card Series matchup with Cleveland, and the battle of the aces never materialized. The Yankees pummeled Shane Bieber en route to an easy 12-3 win in Game 1 (box score). They have a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.

Bieber did not have a single 1-2-3 inning Tuesday and Cleveland was trailing before he even broke a sweat. New York fouled away a lot of pitches and took some quality breaking balls in the dirt, and when Bieber made a mistake, they did not miss. The Yankees had four extra-base hits against Bieber. On the other side, Gerrit Cole took the run support and ran with it, especially after escaping a minor third inning jam. Cleveland never seriously threatened the rest of the night.

Here are three takeaways from New York’s Game 1 winThe Los Angeles Dodgers will begin their quest for an elusive World Series title on Wednesday, hosting the Milwaukee Brewers to start a best-of-three Wild Card Series. The Dodgers earned the National League’s No. 1 seed by going 43-17 during the regular season. The Brewers backed into the postseason with a 29-31 record.World Series and two other National League Championship Series during that span. Yet the Dodgers haven’t won the World Series for themselves since 1988. The Dodgers were the best team in baseball during the regular season; they’d probably rather be known for once as the best team in baseball during the postseason.
