How it’s New York: City Winery is located in New York and Ronnie Spector was born and raised in Spanish Harlem
How it’s Irish: Spector is of Irish descent
Ronnie Spector (née Veronica Yvette Bennett) sang her way into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 with the Ronettes, the band she formed while still in high school, leading up to a run of hits starting in 1963 under the tutelage of future husband Phil Spector and his “Wall of Sound”. “Be My Baby” gave the band worldwide recognition, but they also had the chart toppers “Do I Love You,” “Baby I Love You,” “The Best Part of Breaking Up,” “I Can Hear Music,” and the Grammy Award-winning “Walking in the Rain”. In 2006, “Be My Baby” was added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress.
As if hearing those songs from the bad ass herself isn’t reason enough to turn up, this weekend, for the first time since the 1970s, the very petite dynamo will be performing as ‘Ronnie Spector and The Ronettes’. Since Spector’s Christmas show has been a tradition for over 30 years, the song list will also include her renditions of “Frosty the Snowman,” “Sleigh Ride,” and “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.
Having been a recording artist for more than a half century, Spector has enough stories to fill a book and did, in her memoir Be My Baby: How I Survived Mascara, Miniskirts, and Madness. Like Tina Turner, Spector barely escaped a dangerous and terrifying marriage so expect to hear about that and other stories from her extraordinary life. No doubt by the end of the night you’ll be asking why the hell hasn’t someone given Ronnie Spector the big screen treatment and when is it finally going to happen?!
