The Tribeca Film Festival began April 20 and goes to May 1. There are documentaries, narratives, and shorts. The Press Office helpfully makes lists of films of particular interest: African-American, Jewish, Middle East, LBGT, Technology. They don’t make one for Celtic (yet) though. The Irish Film Board held a reception last night at the Consul’s Residence, celebrating the Irish films, from Ireland, in the Festival– but there are more in the Festival that may appeal, with an Irish actor, or from Scotland, or other Celtic appeal! So here’s our list. Definitely go to the Tribeca Film site; not only can you purchase tickets and learn more, some of the films have clips posted.
First up: the Irish films!
New York: It’s a New York Film Festival. And one of the most highly regarded Festivals out there.
Irish: The Irish Film Industry is doing well, although the economy has tanked. There are a bunch of worthwhile offerings!
BLACKTHORN
How it’s Irish: It features Sam Shepard as Butch Cassidy, and Shepard’s been doing a lot of work at the Abbey– premiering plays in fact. The film also features Irish actor Stephen Rea.

Legend has it that after fleeing the country, the outlaw Butch Cassidy diedin 1908 in a shootout with the Bolivian army. The truth is that he neverdied and he’s been hiding in Bolivia for 20 years. Our adventure starts whenhe decides to return back home and in his journey meets a young Spanish engineer that has just robbed the most powerful Bolivian businessman, owner
of the mine where he was working at.

THE GUARD
How it’s Irish: Made in Ireland by director John Michael McDonagh, starring Brendan Gleeson
Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges) takes the unorthodox cop character to the edge in the dark comedy The Guard. Meet Sergeant Gerry Boyle, one of Galway, Ireland’s finest and dedicated cops. He takes care of business—so what does it matter if he has some drinks, maybe a few drugs, and dabbles with Dublin prostitutes while he’s on the job every so often? When he comes across a dead man’s body that could be linked to a half billion dollars of drug money, Boyle’s rogue ways gets tested with the arrival of straight-laced FBI Agent Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle). Polar opposites, the two must team up for the investigation that tests the limits for each of them.
This show already has a pretty big buzz, so strongly suggested that you buy tickets in advance! This is the film’s New York premiere. This is a Sony Pictures film and will be released widely in July.

THE HIDEAWAYS
How It’s Irish: France/Ireland/Sweden World Premiere, directed by Agnes Merlet
A romance between two loners flourishes in this darkly romantic drama. The Furlong men all were blessed or cursed with unique abilities. Ten-year-old James Furlong’s father was able to shut off all electricity around him when he was scared, and his grandfather went temporarily blind when he thought about sex. James’ mother died while giving birth to him, and as he experiments to figure out what his ability is, he unintentionally causes the death of his father and grandmother. Then, when he’s sent to a reformatory school and sparks a strange illness that wipes out all the children who bullied him, James flees to a cottage in the woods to live a life of isolation. The story continues years later when James meets Mae, a young cancer patient who escapes from the nearby hospital.
