How it’s Irish: One Man Show based on the Autobiography of Irish Actor Gabriel Byrne
This past Sunday I got the chance to see this impressive walk through the life and career of the well-known and loved Irish Actor Gabriel Byrne, “Walking With Ghosts”. Based on his autobiography of the same name, this piece is a delightful, chilling and at times quite emotional stroll through the Dublin of Byrne’s youth, all the way through to his return home to bid goodbye to his parents.
Along the road, he encounters many colorful characters, who all appear through his masterful accents and inventive movement. He magically morphs into his parents, the neighbors, friends, his siblings and many of the actors he has worked alongside.
A heartfelt piece, with Byrne in a subdued outfit that nearly blends into Sinead McKenna’s set which is graced with a chair and table that look like they could have come from his childhood home. A mirrored backdrop seems to lead us off into his memories and the moody lighting adds to the dreamlike quality of the piece.
As revealing and humorous as his book, coming from modest beginnings and making his way to the top of his craft, he doesn’t gloss over the bumps and bruises along the way. I found the play overall a very conversational and intimate piece and left the theatre feeling like I had just made a new friend!
The show runs through this coming Sunday, November 20th, and get your tickets to see it now here. Don’t miss it!
