Works & Process at the Guggenheim Celebrates New York City Pride – Inside the Beat with Les Ballet Afrik

On the occasion of New York City Pride and presented in conjunction with the “Embrace” edition of the Guggenheim Circular, launching June 24, Works & Process, the performing arts series at the Guggenheim, present Inside the Beat with Les Ballet Afrik,a rhythmical exchange of style and conversation of cultural diversity through classes, demonstrations, and a live DJ set to set the tone. Works & Process at the Guggenheim will also premiere 10 Works & Process Artists (WPA) Virtual Commissions featuring LGBTQ+ artists from June 20-29, 2020.

Vogue Ballroom Legend and Founding Father of The Royal House of Oricci, Omari Wiles, proudly presents Les Ballet Afrik dance company and Oricci family members as they highlight their individual roots and how they collectively fuse theses styles into a distinctly unique family and company way of life and expression. Lessons will take place every day at 6:30 pm on Works & Process Instagram Live (@worksandprocess).

Les Ballet Afrik was to premiere their Works & Process commissioned work New York Is Burning by Omari Wiles, an homage to the 30th Anniversary of the iconic documentary Paris Is Burning this past March. The 10 newly commissioned video performances will highlight the creative expressions by LGBTQ+ artists. Examining our evolving world, these inspiring and unique pieces, created while social distancing and less than 5 minutes long, are part of Works & Process Artists (WPA) Virtual Commissions, an initiative founded at the onset of the pandemic to financially support artists and nurture their creative process during these challenging times.

Works & Process Artists (WPA) Virtual Commissions, a direct response to the pandemic, was launched to financially support artists and nurture their creative process during these challenging times. Works & Process, the performing arts series at the Guggenheim, is granting more than $150,000 in commissioning funds to artists who have been or were supposed to be featured at Works & Process. Artists from a wide variety of genres have been commissioned to create new works, less than 5 minutes long, while social distancing, that will premiere on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube (@worksandprocess) every Sunday and Monday at 7:30pm and can be viewed anytime after.

Works & Process at the Guggenheim
Described by The New York Times as “an exceptional opportunity to understand something of the creative process,” for 35 years, New Yorkers have been able to see, hear, and meet the most acclaimed artists in the world, in an intimate setting unlike any other. Works & Process, the performing arts series at the Guggenheim, has championed new works and offered audiences unprecedented access to generations of leading creators and performers. Most performances take place in the Guggenheim’s intimate Frank Lloyd Wright-designed 273-seat Peter B. Lewis Theater. In 2017, Works & Process established a new residency and commissioning program, inviting artists to create new works, made in and for the iconic Guggenheim rotunda. In 2020, Works & Process Artists (WPA) Virtual Commissions was created to financially support artists and nurture their creative process during the pandemic. worksandprocess.org.
