Buffalo in the Bahamas Bowl but the program had momentum going into 2020. Appalachian State went 13-1 last season and finished #19 in the final rankings. They capped their season with a 31-17 win over UAB in the New Orleans Bowl. The Mountaineers have won both previous meetings, including a 56-41 home win in the most recent matchup on September 7, 2019.

Charlotte 49ers Look to Build Off Successful 2019
Charlotte hadn’t won more than five games in a season at the FBS level since making the jump in 2015 before breaking through last season in Will Healy’s first year running the program. The 49ers won their final five conference games last season after starting the year 0-3 as the spread offense started to take wings while the season wore on. Charlotte brings back 13 starters this season, including their starting quarterback and a trio of solid receivers in the mix. The 49ers have to find a way to improve defensively after losing Jeff Gemmell, the school’s all-time leading tackler, and Alex Highsmith, the school’s all-time sack leader. In addition, Benny LeMay, who led the team in rushing last season, is gone as well so the team has to replace him in the ground game.

The 49ers finished last season 84th in the nation in passing offense as they averaged 211.5 yards per game through the air. Charlotte stood a solid 31st in rushing offense as they racked up 203 yards per game, which led Conference USA. The 49ers were 59th in scoring offense with an average of 29.8 points per game while they stood a dismal 103rd in the FBS by allowing an average of 32.4 points a night. Chris Reynolds is back at quarterback after hitting 181 of 291 passes for 2,564 yards with 22 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions. He is the team’s leading returning rusher after carrying the ball 153 times for 791 yards plus six scores. With LeMay gone, Aaron McAllister (81 carries, 380 yards, five TD) is the leading returning running back. He’ll likely split time with Northern Illinois transfer Tre Harbison, who ran 230 times for 1,021 yards and eight scores last season. Victor Tucker led the team with 52 catches for 909 yards and seven scores. Paired with Cameron Dollar (41 receptions, 599 yards, two TD) and Tyler Ringwood (25 catches, 395 yards, five TD), the 49ers have a trio of talented receiving options to work within the aerial game. Jonathan Cruz hit 41 of 44 extra-point attempts and 10 of 13 field-goal tries last season.

Appalachian State Mountaineers Try to Make Noise in First Season of Shawn Clark Era
Appalachian State finished last season 13-1 with their lone defeat a three-point home defeat to Georgia Southern under first-year coach Eli Drinkwitz. Of course, Drinkwitz is gone now, having taken the job at Missouri at the tail end of last season. That means former player and assistant coach Shawn Clark gets a chance to take over what should be one of the elite Group of Five programs in the nation. He coached the team in the New Orleans Bowl victory over UAB and looks to carry that momentum forward this season. Bringing back nine starters on the offensive side of the ball and five of their top six offensive linemen should help the team overcome losing several key contributors defensively.
