Thomas fired an opening-round best 5-under par 65 to get his week started, playing a near-flawless first round with only one bogey and six birdies.
“It was a really, really solid round of golf,” he said post-round. “It’s one of the best rounds I’ve played in a while tee to green.
Reed, Thomas Pieters and Matthew Wolff are T2 through Round 1, trailing Thomas (-5) by just one stroke. McIlroy, Lee Westwood and Louis Oosthuizen are 3 under and T5.
It was a surprising day on the track comparative to expectations. Winged Foot quick greens and treacherous roughs were projected to give golfers fits this week, and talk of a winner with an over-par final-round score was widely discussed in the lead-up to Thursday. Yet 20 golfers are in the red as we head to Friday with the sport’s stars taking advantage of the conditions and the set up.
“I hit the ball very well,” McIlroy told Golf Channel recapping his own round. “I kept it in play, hit a lot of greens, hit a lot of fairways, did everything you have to do at a U.S. Open. I sort of walked off the golf course today a little disappointed; I felt like I could’ve went lower. But before starting out today if someone had given me a 67, I would have taken it.”
CBS Sports was with you the entire way updating this story with everything that happened in Round 1. You can read that below after we break down the key names on the U.S. Open leaderboard through 18 holes.
1. Justin Thomas (-5): Playing with control and shaping your shots will be key this week, and that’s exactly what Thomas did to take the lead through 18 holes. He finished T8 among the field in fairways hit and T7 in greens in regulation, converting some big opportunities with his putter when he needed. He went on a birdie-birdie-birdie run from holes 9-11 and finished with a 3 under 32 on the back.Phil Mickelson’s US Open frustration boiled over on the ninth hole after he hit his second shot way right on Thursday.
An NBC camera caught a defeated Mickelson muttering, “I am so sick of this” after a wayward shot landed on the first tee at Winged Foot. Mickelson did recover to record a par on the hole.
That shot came from the fairway, but it was a rare approach from there as Mickelson struggled with his driving accuracy throughout the round.Mickelson, 50, did open his day with back-to-back birdies before three straight bogeys. But it just got worse from there for Mickelson, who was returning to the site of his greatest US Open disappointment.
Mickelson shot a 42 on the backside with five bogeys and a double bogey on 14. He finished 9-over, which was just one shot better than Lukas Michel who was in last after the first round.
At the 2006 US Open at Winged Foot, Mickelson, double bogeyed the 72nd hole to cost himself the championship. It was one of his six second-place finishes in the US Open.Patrick Reed nailed an impressive hole-in-one during the first round of the U.S. Open on Thursday.
Reed’s tee shot on the seventh hole par 3 took one bounce off the green and fell right into the hole. He hit the shot from 165 yards away and helped salvage his front nine after double bogeying the fifth. The 30-year-old came into the tournament with only one major tournament victory under his belt –the 2018 Masters. He had seven other wins on the PGA Tour and three on the European Tour.
His best finish at the U.S. Open came in 2018.Reed finished four over par in that tournament, which was played at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Shinnecock Hills, N.Y. He finished three shots behind the tournament winner Brooks Koepka and was only two shots behind Tommy Fleetwood and one shot behind Dustin Johnson.
Reed is ranked as the No. 6 golfer in the world and is among the favorites to win the U.S. Open this year.
This year’s U.S. Open is taking place at Winged Foot West Course in Mamaroneck, N.Y. Winged Foot is considered one of the most difficult courses.Tiger Woods had his chances. Then he blew them.
Woods, 44, was on the cusp of vaulting himself into contention in Thursday’s U.S. Open first round at Winged Foot with a string of three birdies from Nos. 9 through 11 to get to 1-under par.
Then it all went wrong for him. In the end, Woods was victimized by too many unforced errors and tumbled down the leaderboard with a 3-over 73. He is in a tie for 71st place, eight shots out of the lead held by Justin Thomas, one of his playing partners.
After the round, Woods, who finished with a sloppy double bogey on the 18th hole, referenced his poor finish no fewer than six times, obviously agitated by it.
“I did not finish off the round like I needed to,” he said. “I made a bunch of putts in the middle part of the round. It seemed like most of my drives on the front nine landed in the fairway and ended up in bad spots. I tried to stay as patient as possible, and unfortunately just did not finish off my round the way I needed to.”On No. 18, Woods’ tee shot landed in the left rough. His second shot landed short of the green, but with a good lie. His third shot was a stunning stub-chunk that a 20-handicapper would make that landed well short of the green. The final blow was a 6-foot bogey putt that he missed to the left just after Collin Morikawa had missed the same putt.
