The Best Medicine, written and performed by Babs Davy, co-founder of the Five Lesbian Brothers, tells the story of a Midwestern Catholic girl living in a 1960’s suburban ranch house, where family mental instability is ignored and goes untreated, save for Sunday Mass and Fleischmann’s blended whiskey. The tale is told by two characters—one an irritable survivor of the house who, with missionary zeal, lays out how she lost her marbles and then recovered them, and the other, a sweet, animated version of the first who can’t overshare enough about her chaotic young life before she discovered the miracle of psycho-pharmaceuticals.
