September 19, 2020

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 12:00 am, repeating indefinitely

The Cincinnati Bearcats will play against a Division II opponent, the Austin Peay Governors, in an early-season tune-up on Saturday at noon ET at Nippert Stadium. After an 11–3 record last season and a win in the Birmingham Bowl, the Bearcats are coming in with an eye to spark another quality season.Cincinnati is the favorite in this one, with an expected 33.5-point (!) margin of victory. It would take nothing short of a miracle for Austin Peay to pull off a win, but maybe they can at least keep Cincinnati from covering the spread.

The Bearcats jumped from №20 to №13 in the AP Top 25 Poll without playing a single snap yet. Will they live up to their lofty ranking? Cincinnati returns 16 starters and is stacked with skill and experience on defense. The Bearcats are widely seen as a serious contender to claim the American Athletic Conference championship. The Governors (0–2) may not offer a useful measuring stick to determine if these cats have claws. After getting drilled 55–0 by Pittsburgh last weekend, Austin Peay does not seem capable of posing a serious challenge against a Top 25 squad. The Governors totaled 137 yards and seven first downs against the Panthers. They went 4-of-16 on third down and totaled a single rushing yard on 22 carries.

While Ohio State still has to wait until Oct. 23 or 24 to open its season, Cincinnati is set to begin its season this weekend, when the American Athletic Conference’s Bearcats will open their 2020 campaign at Nippert Stadium against Austin Peay.

The Bearcats will be the first major college football team in Ohio to play a game this fall; while the Buckeyes are now set to play in just over a month, the Mid-American Conference and its six Ohio teams still don’t know when they’ll be back on the field, as MAC commissioner Jon Steinbrecher says there are still no plans to play this fall. So Cincinnati head coach Luke Fickell and his team certainly have reason to be grateful that they are playing this week and are scheduled to play 10 games this fall.
