Major League Baseball’s 2020 postseason will look unlike any other in baseball history. The league announced plans for the 2020 playoffs in mid-September, and MLB will hold the final three rounds of the 16-team postseason — the Division Series, League Championship Series and World Series — at neutral-site locations. Players will be housed nearby to set up one-location bubbles for each series.
The 16-team playoff bracket was set as the 60-game regular season wrapped up Sunday. The league will start the playoffs with the Wild Card Series on Tuesday. The eight best-of-three matchups in that round will be played at the higher seed’s home ballpark.
It’s going to be a fun postseason with a record 16 teams in the field, and it all starts this week with all 16 qualifiers playing best-of-three Wild Card Series in which the higher seed will be the home team for every game.
Sunday’s games brought clarity:
The St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers are in, the Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants are out.
Also, the Minnesota Twins won the AL Central, and the Yankees’ clinched the AL’s No. 5 seed by virtue of the Toronto Blue Jays losing to the Baltimore Orioles, The Yanks will face the Cleveland Indians, who beat out the White Sox for the No. 4 seed in a tiebreaker (won season series 8-2).
