Named for an ancient Celtic harvest festival, Lúnasa was formed in 1997 from members of Ireland’s greatest bands. Known for stunning shows, they are internationally recognized as one of traditional Irish music’s finest instrumental groups. The band’s complex arrangements and unique sound reshaped the boundaries of traditional music and led to sales of over a quarter million records. Lúnasa is bassist Trevor Hutchinson (The Waterboys, The Sharon Shannon Band), Fiddler Sean Smyth ( Donal Lunny’s Coolfin), flutist Kevin Crawford (Moving Cloud), uilleann piper Cillian Vallely (Riverdance, Bruce Springsteen), and guitarist Ed Boyd (Flook, Michael McGoldrick Band) is their newest member. Folk Roots magazine has rightly termed them an “Irish music dream team.”
