SMU got an unexpected week off last week as their game with TCU was postponed. In their opener against Texas State, the Mustangs got a little more than they bargained for as they were unable to pull away from the Bobcats. The teams traded scores for much of the first half, with SMU taking the lead for good at 28-21 with 3:26 to play in the opening half. While the first half was all about offense, the second half was focused on defense as each team mustered a measly field goal with those coming in the final three minutes of the game. That allowed SMU’s seven-point halftime edge to stand up as the margin of victory. The Mustangs held a 544-416 edge in total offense, held a 26-22 advantage in first downs and won the time of possession battle by a 32:03 to 27:57 margin. Those numbers helped overcome that they turned the ball over three times while forcing two takeaways.
