Rafael Nadal breezed into the second round of the French Open with a straight-sets win over Egor Gerasimov at Roland Garros.Seeking a remarkable 13th title at the clay-court grand slam, Nadal had suggested the conditions and heavier balls he described as “slow and dangerous” could impact his hopes.

The first break came Nadal’s way courtesy of a deft drop shot and that was enough to claim the first set, which he wrapped up with an ace out wide.Gerasimov showed impressive athleticism for a man of his 6ft 5in frame but could not find his range when it mattered, and he fired a forehand long to hand Nadal the second set.

The Belarusian looked on course to prolong the inevitable after breaking for the first time to start the third to take a 2-0 lead. However, Nadal soon erased the deficit and Gerasimov was never the same after receiving heavy strapping on his ankle in a medical timeout following a tumble on the decisive point of the set’s fourth game.

Nadal will face world number 236 Mackenzie McDonald in the second round.Dominic Thiem showed no sign of a hangover from his U.S. Open triumph as he began his Roland Garros campaign with an impressive 6-4 6-3 6-3 win over Marin Cilic on Monday.

Third seed Thiem, beaten by Rafa Nadal in the last two French Open finals, was handed a tough first round against the Croatian former U.S. Open champion, but was straight into the groove under the roof on Court Phillipe Chatrier.

Cilic, who before Thiem’s Flushing Meadows win this month was the most recent first-time Grand Slam champion courtesy of his New York title in 2014, made things difficult for Thiem with some aggressive tactics but faltered at crucial moments.

The 20-year-old Auger-Aliassime, in his second senior appearance at Roland Garros after losing in qualifying in 2018, never found his range under threatening skies on Court Nine.Nishioka dropped serve early in the first set before taking control of the rallies and benefiting from his 19th-seeded opponent’s 58 unforced errors.

The game lasted for 6 hours and 5 minutes, making it the ‘second-longest’ ever match in the history of the Roland Garros. As this happened on the very first day makes it even more fascinating.

It was also the first win at a Grand Slam for the Italian player Guistino. To topple the king, one needs an army consisting of able soldiers. To topple the “King of Clay” one needs to have all the necessary skills as well as luck on his side. Rafael Nadal opened his French Open 2020 journey with a straight-set win against Egor Gerasimov of Belarus. The 12 times Roland Garros Champion outclassed the 27-year-old in the Philippe Chatrier Court in Paris.

The 34-year-old Spaniard is on his quest to clinch his 13th French Open title to take his total Grand Slam tally to 20. However, it is anticipated the run won’t be easy for Rafael Nadal. The tournament has been delayed due to the COVID-19 situation. The sun-baked clay court is damp owing to the rain and the temperature is on the colder side.

Keeping aside all the adversaries, Nadal clinched his first win in the French Open 2020. The Belarusian was no match for the clay-court artisan. The French Open has been the most special venue in his career. Undoubtedly Nadal is happy to be back at the venue.
