The all-or-nothing Cincinnati Reds beat teams these days the way the Milwaukee Brewers did in previous seasons – wait for pitchers to make mistakes and bop the ball out of the park. The Reds used that formula once again Wednesday night, combined with another dominating outing by ace Trevor Bauer, to win the rubber match of an important series, 6-1, at Great American Ball Park.
By taking 2 of 3 from the Brewers, the Reds pulled a game ahead of them in the hunt for both second place in the NL Central and the wild-card race. The night began with Cincinnati, Milwaukee and San Francisco all deadlocked with .500 records at the bottom of the eight-team playoff picture.
The Reds also pulled into a virtual tie with St. Louis for second place in the division after the Cardinals were thumped, 12-3, in Kansas City
It was the eighth time the Brewers failed to climb above the .500 mark this season, leaving them at 27-28 with five games remaining in St. Louis over the final four days of the regular season.
“There’s no roadblock at .500,” manager Craig Counsell said. “We just haven’t been good enough to win that particular game. We’re going to have to be at least .500 to be in contention. If you get over .500, then you’re looking pretty good.
“It’s as simple as that. I think it’s safe to say we have to win at least three (games in St. Louis) and probably four to assure getting in.”
Cincinnati scored 14 runs in the three games, all coming on home runs. The Reds have been the most reliant team in the majors on the long ball this season (60% of their runs) but more so than that, they have depended on their pitching.
Pitching on short rest, Bauer delivered exactly what was expected for a pitcher with a 1.80 earned run average. The theatrical right-hander went eight innings, allowing only four hits and one run with a walk and 12 strikeouts.
