The No. 6 North Carolina Tar Heels will travel to the Carrier Dome to take on the Syracuse Orange on Saturday in an ACC showdown.
Florida State to improve to 3-0 in ACC play. UNC took a four-point lead into halftime, but scorched the Seminoles with 65 second half points to cruise to a 16-point victory. In the absence of Kennedy Meeks, Brice Johnson stepped up in a major way. Johnson finished with a monster performance of 39 points and 23 rebounds, the first Tar Heel to numbers like that since Billy Cunningham in 1964. Marcus Paige also put up big numbers with 30 points, five rebounds and five assists. Looking ahead at the schedule, the Heels will take on in-state rivals NC State (Jan. 16) and Wake Forest (Jan. 20) at home.
The Orange (10-6, 0-3 ACC) have had a nightmare start to ACC play dropping their first three games, including an overtime heartbreaker against Clemson last time out. With under 20 seconds to play, Tyler London made a three-pointer to pull Syracuse within one. Syracuse had a chance to win as Trevor Cooney stole the ball from Jaron Blossomgame, but fired a three that went awry, giving the Orange the loss. Michael Gbinije led all scorers with a game-high 22 points, while Malachi Richardson finished with 21 points and nine rebounds to lead the frontcourt. After UNC, Syracuse will welcome Boston College to the Carrier Dome on Jan. 13.
This matchup will mark the 10th meeting all-time between UNC and Syracuse. The Tar Heels lead the series 5-4 and took the latest matchup 93-83 last year in Chapel Hill.
