The No 2. Crimson Tide on Saturday will begin a bid for their 18th national championship — and sixth under coach Nick Saban — in Columbia, Mo., against Missouri. It’s a tough ask for the hosting Tigers and first-year coach Eliah Drinkwitz, who likely could not have drawn a worst first opponent in this COVID-19-affected season. He, at least publicly, has said he’s ready for the challenge the Tide will bring with them.
That said, don’t expect an overly raucous crowd at Faurot Field to back the team up; Missouri is allowing no more than 25 percent of its usual 62,621 capacity into the stadium. That’s just one of many differences to expect for Alabama and the SEC this season — not to mention the 10-game, conference-only schedule that will bleed into December or the Dec. 19 conference championship game.

Look for a few changes to the Alabama team itself as well: Gone are such offensive staples as receivers Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III and offensive tackle Jedrick Wills. Gone too is all-world quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, but at least Tide fans know what to expect from starter Mac Jones, who filled in admirably in the final three-and-a-half games. The return of running back Najee Harris and receivers DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle are also reasons for optimism in a world without Tagovailoa.

Defensively, Alabama will be happy to see the return of linebacker Dylan Moses, an otherworldly talent who missed all of 2020 with a torn ACL. Indeed, Saban and Co. will look to get several injured contributors back on the defensive side of the ball this year, returning to a play style that consistently saw the unit ranked among the best in the nation prior to the last couple of seasons.
