Reddit US Open 2020 Live Stream: Another Next-Gen star, Alexander Zverev, came mighty close to winning a Major himself. He had a 2-0 set advantage over Thiem in the 2020 US Open final. He even had the chance to serve the match out but failed to do so. Sadly for the German, he may not get another golden opportunity like that soon.Novak Djokovic’s 4th round exit at the US Open was the first occasion since 2004 that neither Federer, Nadal, or Djokovic had made a Grand Slam quarter-final.

Dominic Thiem’s title victory at the US Open 2020 broke the Big Three’s four-year hold on Grand Slam titles. Thiem’s title win seems to have given the Next-Gen the confidence to challenge Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic at the Majors and Grigor Dimitrov is one of them.
In his early days on the ATP Tour, Dimitrov was touted as the player who would challenge the supremacy of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic. However, he has failed to challenge the three at the Grand Slam level. Now, Grigor Dimitrov believes that a change of guard is on the horizon.
In over a decade now, only Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka, Juan Martin Del Potro, Marin Cilic, and now Thiem have won a Slam apart from the Big 3.Matthew Wolff will sleep on a 54-hole lead for the first time at a major championship. Of course, this time 50 days ago, he had never even played in a major championship. At Winged Foot on Sunday, the 21-year-old will take a two-stroke lead into the final round of the 2020 U.S. Open.
Wolff, following his world-class 65 on Saturday, is trying to become the first golfer since Francis Ouimet in 1913 to win a U.S. Open in his debut. Coincidentally (or not?), the 107-year anniversary of Ouimet’s win at The Country Club is on Sunday, Sept. 20. If Wolff does win on Sunday, he would be the youngest major winner since Tiger Woods took the 1997 Masters at 21 and youngest golfer to win the U.S. Open since Bobby Jones in 1923.
That’s a lot to think about for somebody who has just three top 10s on the PGA Tour in his career. The talent with Wolff is undeniable — you don’t shoot two rounds of 66 or better in a U.S. Open without immense talent — but we’ve been here before with him just a few months ago. He took a three-stroke lead over Bryson DeChambeau into the final round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, and DeChambeau (who will be his playing partner on Sunday at Winged Foot) got him by three.
Wolff said after his round that that experience taught him a lot. Whether the lessons took will be on display on Sunday afternoon at his nation’s championship. He won’t have to be perfect over the final 18 holes because of what he did over the first three days, but he’ll feel some he heat he maybe has not felt before from both a course that will be dialed in and a chase pack that will be getting after it. If he stumbles, there are some absolute stars just behind him waiting to clean up the first major of the season.Wolff, playing in only his second major after qualifying for this tournament by tying for fourth at last month’s US PGA Championship, holed five birdies as he played the first nine holes in 30 shots.
The world number 36, who has one win on the PGA Tour, only hit two of 14 fairways but scrambled well and made just one bogey, after finding the trees on the 16th with one of many wayward tee shots, but recovered to birdie the last.”I got pretty fortunate with my lies in the rough,” he said. “I stuck with my game. It was a grind out there but hopefully I hit a few more fairways on Sunday.”
If Wolff completes the win, it will be 107 years, to the day, since 20-year-old amateur Francis Ouimet claimed the title at his first attempt after winning a US Open that had also been delayed from June to September. This year’s was pushed back because of the coronavirus pandemic. Back then, it was to allow six-time Open champion Harry Vardon and fellow Briton Ted Ray to play. Ouimet, who famously had a 10-year-old caddie, beat them both in an 18-hole play-off.
Wolff would also become the youngest player to win a major since Tiger Woods won the first of his 15 at the 1997 Masters. His closest challenger is DeChambeau, who looked set to post a third successive round in the 60s after birdies on 16 and 17 but he bogeyed the 18th to hand Wolff a two-stroke advantage at the top.The world number nine, chasing his first major title, was satisfied with his level-par round after beginning the day with successive bogeys.
“It shows perseverance and resilience,” said DeChambeau, who added he was heading to the practice range to “fix a couple of things”.FFollowing Thursday’s so-called “easy” first round of the 2020 U.S. Open, golf fans wanted Winged Foot to fight back. Well, we’re pleased to report that not only has the course fought back, it’s rubbing the competitors’ noses in the dirt. Cruel might be underselling it. That is one of the worst ricochets off a flagstick you’ll ever see in a professional golf tournament. The only thing that would have made it worse is if it rolled all the way into that creek behind him.
Cantlay’s chip, which came from 25 yards out, ended up 47 yards from the pin. That means he hit one -22 yards. How he was able to get it up and down for bogey after that is a triumph of the human spirit. After seeing this, we should all apologize to Matt Wallace, who had his caddie tend the flagstick from 50 yards out during Thursday’s first round at the par-5 12th hole, only to lay the sod over it. This is what he was trying to avoid, he just didn’t execute.
