Iona is the only Scottish focused traditional music session that happens regularly in Brooklyn, NY (every Monday night – 180 Grand Street – from 8.30pm til late). Drawing heavily from the pipes and fiddle repertoire of Scotland, Shetland and the Hebrides, Cape Breton Island and Donegal, we play a great variety of traditional and modern tunes.
If you’ve ever been to sessions in Scotland you’ll know there’s a renaissance of traditional music rising there ; the quality of playing and composition has never been better and there’s a epic vibe in the bars where traditional music is played. We’re creating a link to that amazing Scottish scene in the People’s Republic of Brooklyn. If you’re visiting NYC come on down, check it out – visiting musicians are always welcome.
We have a tune list and share folder available if you’re interested in coming down to play regularly, but bring your own tunes…..
We welcome pipers (scottish small pipes, borders, uilleann) and play more pipe tunes that you might hear in a regular trad session, being big fans of the tunes of Allan McDonald, Pipe Major Donald McLeod and the late and legendary piper, Gordon Duncan. Since we’re inside and not on Cape Breton Island, the GHB’s only come out for special occasions. Visiting pipers and fiddlers are specially welcome at Iona, and we are always happy to see new faces.
If you are a piper or a fiddler , a dancer or a singer, come down and check out the scene.
Every Monday at Iona from 8.30pm , 180 Grand Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY. Get in touch for more info – www.ionascottishsession.com
