The storylines are plentiful this week. Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm are looking to continue their incredible play. Tiger Woods and especially Phil Mickelson are hoping to tap into the fountain of youth as Woods seeks to conquer a course he’s struggled playing and Lefty again efforts toward the lone major that has eluded him. On Wednesday, during the USGA’s annual press conference ahead of the championship, however, we heard more definitively just how close officials were from leaving Winged Foot. USGA CEO Mike Davis explained that as the leaders of PGA, LPGA and European Tours, along with those who oversee the four men’s majors, met to try and put together a new global golf calendar, it appeared the Open Championship would slide to September, the Masters to November and then the U.S. Open would move to the very end of 2020. The U.S. Open is set to tee off three months after it was originally scheduled at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the June 18 start date was pushed back to September 17, giving the field a bit more time to practice and placing the major event just after the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
Qualifying for the tournament was also revamped given the circumstances. The full 2020 field will be made up of players who are exempt from qualifying, with the total number of entries shifting from 156 to 144.
