Nadal is the primary men’s storyline, favored to tie Roger Federer‘s male record of 20 major titles and extend his own record of 12 French Open crowns. Federer is absent after knee operations earlier this year.
The Spaniard’s primary competition is top-ranked Novak Djokovic, the 2016 French Open champion whose only defeat in 2020 was a U.S. Open default for hitting a ball that struck a linesperson in the throat.
Williams bids again to match the overall Grand Slam singles mark of 24 held by Australian Margaret Court. Williams, a three-time French Open champion, lost in the third and fourth round the last two years and is coming off a U.S. Open semifinal exit.
The women’s field is led by 2018 champion Simona Halep but lacks defending champion Ash Barty of Australia, not traveling due to the coronavirus pandemic. Also out: U.S. Open winner Naomi Osaka, citing a sore hamstring and tight turnaround from prevailing in New York two weeks ago.
The World No.7 has now withdrawn from the French Open, rescheduled to start on Sunday from May due to the coronavirus pandemic.
She had already been forced to skip the defence of her US Open crown after being unable to properly prepare, in part because of the global health crisis.
“I have come to the difficult decision to skip the clay court swing this year and will be taking the remainder of the season off to focus on my health and training,” Andreescu wrote on Twitter.
“As hard as it was to come to this conclusion, I have so much to look forward to in 2021, including the Olympics; I want to use this time to focus on my game so I can come back stronger and better than ever.”

The French Open 2020 seeds were recently unveiled. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic maintained his position as the top seed after he thrashed Diego Schwartzman to win the Italian Open 2020 title. But Swiss Maestro Roger Federer wasn’t a part of the seeds, since he won’t feature in the tournament. The US Open 2020 winner Dominic Thiem is at the third spot in the seeds. World No. 2, Rafael Nadal, is at the number two seed despite his humiliating loss to Diego Schwartzman.
Since World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty won’t play at the French Open 2020, the Italian Open 2020 winner Simona Halep is the top seed at the tournament. Her counterpart at the Italian Open 2020 finals, World No. 4 Karolina Pliskova, who got injured in the match, is at the second seed. Chances of another Halep versus Pliskova final at the French Open 2020 are high. The 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams is currently at the sixth seed.
