This year marks the 45th UEFA Super Cup, which was originally scheduled for August in Portugal, but was delayed and relocated due to the coronavirus pandemic in Europe.
Bayern Munich is favored to win after a ridiculous season and non-stop wins since December. They were the only squad to finish 6-0 in groups and they dominated every game in the knockout bracket by at least a 3-goal lead, except for the finals which they won 1-0 against Paris Saint-Germain.
To kick-start UEFA club competitions for the 2020-21 season, the UEFA Super Cup between Bayern Munich and Sevilla is set for this Thursday. It’s the Champions League winners, Bayern, against the Spanish side that won the Europa League in August. Bayern rolled through UCL, crushed Barcelona 8-2 in the quarterfinals and beat PSG 1-0 to win the trophy, while Sevilla got by Manchester United and Inter Milan to lift the crown.
Entering the match, Bayern is coming off of an 8-0 win over Schalke on Friday in their Bundesliga opener, while Sevilla hasn’t played an official match since the final but did beat Levante 3-2 in a friendly last week.
Bayern Munich: In fine form after the treble and crushing Schalke on Friday, Bayern are expected to roll in this game. Don’t expect a light lineup by Hansi Flick, and expect them to dominate from start to finish as they have done for the last year or so. They are so much stronger than Sevilla everywhere on the pitch, and the only way they lose this one is if they leave their scoring boots in Germany. The dominance should start early, with Sevilla’s outside backs likely struggling with Bayern’s speed on the wings.
Sevilla: Well rested, having kept their key players so far and having added Ivan Rakitic, the club is hoping to build off of a really strong 2019-20 season. But beating Bayern seems borderline impossible unless the German side just has a nightmare performance. With a physical central defense, Sevilla must play cautious because the club concedes more penalties than it should with reckless challenges. Against Bayern, that is asking for trouble.
The Puskás Aréna in Budapest, Hungary, hosts this year’s UEFA Super Cup. Both participating clubs are on the hunt for their second Super Cup victory with Bayern Munich having won it most recently in 2013 and Sevilla last lifting the trophy in 2006.
Bayern Munich stormed the Bundesliga last season, picking up a record eighth consecutive German title win. FCB went on to win the DFB-Pokal to complete the domestic double, too.
As well as success in their native Germany, Bayern also excelled on the European stage, knocking out the likes of Chelsea, Lyon, and Barcelona en route to the Champions League final. Hans-Dieter Flick’s side faced French champions Paris Saint-Germain in the final in Benfica’s Estádio da Luz, winning 1-0 to claim Europe’s top prize and a place in the 2020 UEFA Super Cup.
Bayern picked up where they left off with a stunning 8-0 win to kick-off their 2020/21 Bundesliga season against Schalke so it’s fair to say The Bavarians will come into today’s game full of confidence.
Sevilla had a solid season in La Liga last year, ultimately finishing fourth — their best finish since 2017. Los Nervionenses are yet to kick off their 2020/21 domestic season due to the late completion of European competitions in the summer.
The route to the final of last season’s Europa League final saw Julen Lopetegui’s side defeat Serie A’s Roma as well as Wolves and Manchester United of the Premier League. Sevilla met and overcame Inter Milan in the final in FC Köln’s RheinEnergieSTADION with a 3-2 victory on the night.

At the aptly named Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary, these legends of the game lock horns for the 2020 Super Cup later this week.Bayern Munich takes on Schalke 04 Friday as the German Bundesliga kicks off a new season. Bayern returns to the pitch with two championships this year, having returned from coronavirus hiatus to win a Bundesliga title earlier this year and a UEFA Champions League title last month. Bayern Munich brings back a loaded roster, featuring Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Müller, Manuel Neuer and others. However, the squad is set for major changes in the midfield following the news that Spanish midfielder Thiago Alcantara has signed a four-year deal with Liverpool of the English Premier League. On the other side, Schalke will be looking to improve from its 2019-20 campaign, when it finished 12th in the Bundesliga standings, scoring just 38 goals in 34 matches, just two more than the lowest mark in the league. Suat Serdar is Schalke’s top scorer this year, netting seven goals in 20 matches.
Friday’s match will air on ESPN, which is a change from earlier this year, when Bundesliga matches aired on FOX networks.
