The Eastern Kentucky football team will make its 2020 debut Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium against West Virginia.Eastern Kentucky has a tough hill to climb to win the Big 12 Conference but this might be the best team to be able to do so. Led by quarterback Brock Purdy, the Cyclones could find themselves in the conference’s title game if they avoid losing more than two conference games this season. With two losses the Cyclones would still need some help from tiebreakers but with the near-even level of play among the top teams of the conference, it’s very likely Eastern Kentucky makes the cut.

No one will mistake the 2019 Bobcats defense for Eastern Kentucky’s 2020 squad. Nonetheless, West Virginia head coach Billy Napier clearly had no issues preparing for the 3-3-5 scheme, which is the same base formation that Cyclones defensive coordinator Jon Heacock employs.
Eastern Kentucky’s defense returns 73% of its production from 2019, when the Cyclones ranked 71st in success rate. They will miss last season’s top tackler, Marcel Spears Jr., but the Cyclones retain a bevy of linebackers and defensive backs with ample experience to offset Spears’ departure.
Eastern Kentucky is playing with the hopes of moving up in the national rankings, and they’re far better playing in Ames than they are on the road. That said, there will be no fans in the stands cheering them on, so it’s hard to see there being too much of a home-field advantage in this game.
I think Purdy and the Cyclones’ air attack becomes too much for the West Virginia defense, but I also think the Ragin’ Cajuns give them a good run, at least for a while. I see Eastern Kentucky winning, but UL-Lafayette covering the spread. OddShark has West Virginia winning by a predicted score of 33-30. I think it’ll be more like Eastern Kentucky 27, West Virginia 24.
