Caitlin Warbelow Online Fiddle Workshops

How it’s New York: Caitlin Warbelow is one of the New York Trad scene’s regulars; along with teaching at Irish Arts Center she runs TuneSupply and is often at Mary O’s. She hails originally from Alaska, and plays in a number of styles; she was also the onstage fiddler in the Broadway show Come From Away.
How it’s Irish: Caitlin is teaching individual Irish music workshops in August: the first is Saturday Aug. 18.

This is not an ad, but I’m afraid it may read like one: I’m just that excited about Caitlin Warbelow’s pay-what-you-can Irish fiddle workshops this summer: among other topics are harmony on the fly and how to practice! These are the kind of topics that always come up in classes (including the classes Caitlin teachers through Irish Arts Center) but never seem to really get enough time.

The classes are all on Zoom, they are pay-what-you-can, and will be recorded so you can even sign up for a class during a time when you can’t be present (I skipped ALL of Fiddle Hell online last year and caught up to it later!). Of course if you ARE able to watch live, you can ask questions.

Since they are individual too you can pick which ones you want to go to, and skip others– really a help for those of us in education or in theatre whose Saturdays may soon be sacred or busy!

Here is the email Caitlin sent out (which I received because I take her classes at IAC– one good thing about the epidemic was the onset of Zoom group classes; my life wouldn’t allow me to commute to the city on a Monday night, and I get to “meet” fiddlers from all over the country!).

My next batch of online mini-workshops will run Saturday, August 19th to Wednesday, August 30th. I thought you might be interested so here’s the info! You can register using the links below or see all classes here. At the request of students, I’m focusing mainly on topics rather than tunes for this batch.

These will be recorded and the videos sent automatically afterwards, so if you have a conflict you can still register and watch later. The cost is “pay what it’s worth to you” so that anyone can attend. The level of each class is listed in the description. Many classes are open to all instruments, so bring your non-fiddle friends!

And here’s what she writes about “Fiddle Calisthenics”:
In this workout, er, workshop, we’ll spend an hour going through a whole ton of warmups and exercises that you’ll be able to pick-and-choose from when creating your own daily practice routines. We’ll also spend a few minutes discussing the often-neglected topic of “How to Practice,” which will allow you to structure your precious bits of practice time more efficiently in order to move towards your personal fiddle goals more quickly. If you’ve got specific problems you’re dealing with, bring them to class. Please also bring any questions or comments you’ve got about the art/torture of practicing. Who’s this for: The exercises will be geared towards fiddlers, however, any melody instrument is welcome to join. Level: All. You can make warmups and exercises as simple or difficult as you want by implementing slight modifications which will be discussed. Cost: Pay what it’s worth to you! (Note: the checkout page defaults to $25, but that’s not the suggested price. It’s the default and I can’t change it. Pay what it’s worth to you!)
Since I hardly practice at all except for participating in a session, this is very welcome!
